Dear Friends and Family,
Thank you so much for supporting me on all of the past mission trips that I have been a part of. You have truly been a blessing to people around the world who have never heard the name Jesus spoken before. These trips have changed my life and I am excited to see what the Lord has for me in the near and distant future as far as missions. Pray that I would be convicted daily to live as if on mission for Jesus loving people, serving people, and rooting myself in the word of God.
Currently, I am studying at Hardin-Simmons University and I am growing in Christ each day. I am double major in Spanish and Education and I am minoring in Biblical Studies. God has confirmed in my life that I will be doing mission work at some point in the future and this is a very exciting time for me. Thank you for all of your prayers!
This summer, God is leading me in a different direction. I hope to stay with Teresa Devlin, a missionary in La Ceiba, Honduras. Teresa has been in Honduras for about 15 years and she runs a Music Conservatory for underprivileged children. Within the last year or so, Teresa has started an orphanage that aspires to have up to 300 orphans in the near future. The orphanage has some residents but much of it is still under construction. I will be living with Teresa in her house and serving at the Music Conservatory and helping out at the orphanage for 5 weeks from the beginning of July to the first week of August. Two of my friends, Andy Garret and Treg Hudson, who are double majors at Hardin-Simmons in Music and Spanish, will be coming with me to serve as well. My dad, Floyd VanDerStoep, also hopes to come to Honduras for a shorter period of time, about two weeks, to have Bible studies with the teachers at the Music Conservatory, and also help out with any construction at the orphanage. We are all are very excited about this summer because we all hope to someday use our Spanish and music in mission work. What a wonderful opportunity!
This summer will be different for me because I will not be going with the New America Singers and the dynamics of the trip will be different. I am somewhat nervous about this trip because it is out of the ordinary from what I have done, but I know that this is what God has for us this summer. I am excited because I can’t wait to build relationships, use my Spanish, and learn from a seasoned missionary who has been serving the Lord so faithfully.
In order to make this trip a reality, we greatly need your prayers. Nothing can come together without the Lord willing it and providing the means to make this trip happen. Also, if you feel led to give to this trip we would greatly appreciate your help. Both Treg and Andy are in Spain right now studying abroad and so it is much more difficult for them to raise funds. Airfares and living expenses for the three of us should run between 2,500 and 3,500. The reason for gap of money is because airfares are constantly going up and the sooner we are able to raise the funds, the more money we will save on airfares. If any money comes in over our necessary expenses, this money will be sent to Teresa Devlin to go toward the Music Conservatory and orphanage. I will keep you updated on the progress of our planning and fundraising.
Thank you so much for reading and for your prayers. You are a blessing to me and I so thankful to have you in my life!
Sincerely, Lydia VanDerStoep
